RCM's History In Albania
RCM’s work in Albania began in 1992 and represented the first permanent Reformed/Presbyterian ministry presence in the country since the early 1900's. Rev. and Mrs. Patrick Dickens began this beachhead following in the tradition of Dr. and Mrs. Phineas Kennedy (missionary to Albania in early 1900’s). The central thrust of their ministry in Albania was to present Christ - especially by word, but also by deed. Their objective was to call individuals, families and the people of Albania to Christ Jesus as Savior, Lord and King. In God's providence, due to the ill health of Patrick's parents, they were forced to practice what they had taught by leaving Albania in 1995 to look after their parents.
However, by the time they had left, they had impacted quite significantly the lives of several local Albanians, one of whom continues working for Reformation and the spread of Reformation theology in Albania.
Meet Nardi and Enkeleida Doka
Nardi worked for the police department as a radio operator and was a popular local rock singer in the early days of freedom. His influence throughout the Durres area is significant. He became a Christian through reading the Scriptures and was converted. This thirst for literature led him to our reading room while Rev. Dickens was there. He soon became an elder in the local church he attended. Nardi has studied at our seminary for several years in a non-degree program aimed at providing him with a well-rounded theological education. His heart is set on bringing Reformation to Albania. The outworking of that is still under discussion.
Rev. Dickens continues in his association with RCM as the co-director for Albania, but currently lives in Arkansas.
WORK AT PRESENT
Our work in Albania since the departure of the Dickens family has primarily been that of education and literature production, translation and distribution. We currently maintain a reading room and seek opportunities to initiate the establishment of a Reformed church. We provide books and education to Nardi and an increasing circle of contacts he is developing.
Completed translations - Westminster Shorter Catechism and several tracts now in distribution.
Westminster Confession of Faith, Good News Bible Study ready for printing.
LONG TERM MISSION OBJECTIVES
- Call Albanian families back to God and His divine purpose of establishing covenant families and communities by providing teaching material and literature for family worship and discipleship.
- Be a catalyst through Bible study groups, churches, resource libraries, and businesses for promoting and implementing biblical salvation and biblical worldview principles (pro-life, anti-pornography, creationism, free-market economy, etc.).
- Offer the Good News Bible Study program and various levels of Christian education ranging from the young child through the college and seminary level student.
- Develop basic Bible study and catechetical materials in the Albanian language for theological growth.
- Establish a Christian college and seminary to promote the reformation of the country.
PERSONNEL
- Rev. Patrick Dickens, his wife Susan and four covenant children: Joshua, Jeremiah, Jessica and Josiah. Rev. Dickens worked previously in a church-planting ministry in West Africa and pastored a church in Texas. They are currently on an extended emergency family furlough in the U.S., living in Arkansas.
- Nardi and Enkeleida Doka are our primary colleagues in Albania. As the Lord prospers, we anticipate assisting them in developing a business that will give them the financial support needed to concentrate on the Reformation of Albania. They currently assist with a children's evangelism program that provides a subsistence existence. He continues as an elder in a local church and is bringing more and more Reformational influence to the area.
- Needed Personnel: One or more families are urgently needed, ideally with mission experience and theological training. Residence might be in Albania, Greece, Italy or Macedonia. The work could extend even into Kosovo, Serbia and Montenegro. Emphasis would be on education, discipleship and literature production.
